The Chornobyl Incident

A window to a nuclear accident has opened in London! The following is a guide on how this plot expansion will play out.

The Chornobyl Incident is an alternate universe equivalent to the real life nuclear accident which happened in the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. A summary of that can be found here, although it is not necessary to read through the entire page before posting here. Knowing that the Chornobyl Incident is a nuclear accident which occurred (or in this case, is occurring) in a nuclear power plant is enough. Also note that the Chernobyl Incident would not have occurred in this AU world until today. Therefore, the surrounding areas in this world will be thriving cities, and not the ghost towns we see in our world today.

Setting

A massive evacuation has occurred near The Prypyat Exit. This thread is now only open to those who are joining in from The Wymouth Exit, and those who will linger near The Prypyat Exit, if they have escaped the evacuation. If your character is evacuated, please post here. If your character has wandered deeper into the city, please start a new thread!

The window to the disaster from Lyra's World has opened in a suburb in London called Wymouth. Wymouth is easily accessible via hansom cabs, cars, furnicular trains, on foot...anything. It is a typical London suburb for the rapidly rising middle class, rows of terrace houses, a local school, a park etc. The window's entrance is located at an intersection, bordering a park and some houses. It is on street level, and will be referred to in the future as The Wymouth Entrance.

The window to the disaster into an alternate world has opened at the city of Prypyat, Soviet Ukraine, about 6km (3.7 miles) away from the Chornobyl Power Plant. This will be referred to in the future as The Prypat Exit. This window's exit is located beside Prypat's main fire station.

This disaster will be set in 2014, with the equivalent technology and information which will come with it. In this world, Soviet Ukraine is still a member of the Soviet Union (hence the name), and the Soviet Union has never been dissolved. Although this Soviet Union is still under Communist leadership, the people have enjoyed freedoms akin to what the people in Russia experience today. Modern technology will be available, but the people in Prypyat will not have daemons.

Anyone near The Wymouth Entrance will notice that fire trucks not from our world are racing towards a distant spiral of smoke. The locals are in groups, chatting and pointing at the fire brigades in confusion. Some of them are backing away and leaving the area in fear. All of them are speaking in Ukrainian and some of them are taking photos and tweeting about it on their phones. Their attention is focused on the disaster several kilometres ahead of them. No one has noticed that a window to another world has opened behind them.

Conversely, a small group of people from Lyra's London have gathered in front of The Wymouth Entrance, open mouthed. Most of them have never seen fire brigades like that, much less the different fashion and language spoken. A red Victorian era fire brigade drawn by horses has even arrived at the scene, complete with carriage, firemen and horses, but with the current chaos at The Prypyat Exit and the strange scent in the air, the horses are refusing to cross over to the other side.

It is currently 6:30am, Saturday in London. The city is waking up as some people go about their morning exercise, children head off to the park, etc.

Current crowd size: 50 at The Wymouth Entrance; 70 at The Prypat Exit (and massively decreasing as they are being evacuated)

Chronology of Events

19/09 - The window opens. A small crowd gathers at Wymouth, London, but the police are not alerted to this event yet. A Victorian era fire carriage drawn by horses has arrived in response to the emergency, but none of the horses are willing to cross the window...
20/09 - Policemen have arrived at The Wymouth Entrance to control the crowd, but they are heavily outnumbered. Some of them are told to run to the Magisterium for help...
20/09 - Ukrainian policemen have arrived at The Prypat Exit to investigate reports of an escaped snow leopard and a smoke bomb throwing hooligan. They are armed with guns, and have orders to arrest anyone who is causing trouble...
22/09 - Soviet Ukrainian authorities are now barricading the area around The Prypat Exit, in preparation for a mass evacuation. There will only be one entrance and one exit out of the area surrounding the window...
22/09 - The police at The Wymouth Entrance are still severely under-represented as the officers fight their way through the crowd towards the Magisterium...
23/09 - Soviet Ukrainian authorities in Hazmat suits are now evacuating the people in The Prypat Exit. Due to the volume of people, they have not noticed any daemons yet...
24/09 - The Prypyat Exit has now been evacuated and the action now continues in three different threads.
08/10 - There is a small group of children without daemons under a tree at The Wymouth Entrance.

At this point, please only post in this thread if your character is still in The Wymouth Entrance, or has somehow evaded Soviet Ukrainian authorities (hiding at the sight of them, etc.) If your character is in The Prypyat Exit and evacuated to the nuclear bunker, please post here.

If your character has wandered off into the city, please create a new thread and continue posting there.

But I've only just joined the action!

Simple! Just pick one of the three paths above and start posting in the appropriate threads!

Participants

Anyone! It is entirely up to you how your character(s) will react to this. Cross over to Prypyat if you wish, or stick around and watch from a distance.

Do note that radiation sickness will soon play a big part in this plot expansion, but I will hold off on that for now as this is just the beginning. Rest assured, however, that you will have complete freedom in deciding on the symptoms your character will face. No character will die unless you want them to.

Others

Your character's participation will determine the way this will play out!

Unlockable Event #4
If more than six characters (NPCs included) converge on The Wymouth Entrance, a stampede will occur.

Unlockable Event #3 Unlocked!
If more than four (NPC's included) characters cross over to The Prypat Exit, the arriving Ukrainian policemen will be overwhelmed by the sudden daemons and will radio for help. But they will not shoot!

Unlockable Event #2 Unlocked

If more than four (NPC's included) characters remain at The Wymouth Entrance, the large crowd will prevent the policemen from reaching the Magisterium and the fire station in time and no additional help will arrive immediately.

If less than four (NPC's included) characters remain at The Wymouth Entrance, the crowd is small enough for the policemen to reach the Magisterium and the fire station and a large army of Magisterium Guards and firemen will arrive shortly.

Unlockable Event #1 Unlocked!

If more than four characters (NPC's included) appear on the scene, a group of policemen will appear to try and cordon the window off and prevent anyone from entering.

If less than four (NPC's included) number of characters appear, the window has sufficiently gone under the Magisterium's security forces's radar for the moment and everyone is free to explore at will.

Things will move quickly, but I will provide an updated list of events in this post for easy reference.

This thread will be the main thread centred around The Wymouth Entrance. Your characters are welcome to create new threads to deal with the fallout of this incident/interact with other characters. To keep things in order, please post all Chornobyl related threads in this board only!

If you would like to participate with an NPC character, please post with the NPC account. Details below:

Chronology of events moved upwards for convenience.

Thanks to Archy for suggesting this plot and walking me through a summary of nuclear disasters!

Finta's POV

Finta, 45, had seen plenty of things in his life. But none like this! The station's horses, very well trained he might add, were absolutely refusing to go any further. He could see the smoke all right, bloody great smoke too, but something about it was all strange. 'Sif he was seeing it through...

A bloody great window that's what it was.

"Wha's happenin' now?"

He jumped off the front of the cab with his raccoon daemon, Situ, on his shoulders.

"Somebody bloody tell me wha's happenin' please!"

Nobody heard him over the ruckus as everyone stood on each other's toes for a closer look.

Some mornings you know you really don't want to get out of bed... And then there are mornings that make a perfect split between "This is going to be hell" and "if I stay here, I'm a dead man."

That was the case for Archy, happily asleep until his phone went off. The additional sensors he'd received detected a broad spectrum burst of radiation. There were alpha and beta particles, x rays and gamma rays, and already a spiking background radiation level. It made a particularly sharp alarm, specifically for this kind of disaster. He managed to lay there a few seconds more in the early AM before picking up the phone to look.

"These idiots detonate a nuke on their own soil?" he asked the empty air as a sense of urgency overcame him. Nuclear bomb, spiking background radiation... Within minutes, he dug into his bag, pulling out a fairly basic hazmat suit. It was baggy, a military type one-size-fits-all suit. He stripped, slipped it on, and did his best to get his clothes to fit over it. Lastly came the gas mask, something he couldn't hide.

It'd make him stand out more, but this wasn't something you typically wanted to go without. He just tried to cover his face with his hood, make it harder to notice.

Meanwhile, Eve had the luxury of being fairly lazy. They didn't have a gas mask that'd fit her. No one had ever made one. Not that she needed it. She had appeared to be less affected by radioactive sources before, perhaps a result of being forged in a particle accelerator, surrounded by radioactive particles.

Once Archy was ready, they gathered their things. He carried Eve's bag and harness, ready to set her up later. They headed out, departing in the direction of the radiation, looking to see what it was and whether to flee the area entirely or shelter here or whatever made the most sense.

After some time, they came upon the portal and the crowd. They looked over everyone present and at the world before them. This could be a one way trip. On the other end was Ukraine, an Earth similar to his homeland. There would be a disaster going on, but it was far too late for Cherynobyl... Something was wrong here. He looked at the gathered people and quietly slipped through into the other world. It was an interesting question where he would stick out the most.

Finta's POV

And suddenly, a...man? A boy in fancy dress?...pushed through the crowd and just...entered.

"Hey! HEY!"

Finta paused for a moment, but the Fireman's Code to save and rescue was well taught in the station, and after a minute or so, he took a deep breath, and gingerly followed The Stranger.

It was about twenty steps or so before he realised that he had already left London behind and had entered a...city? But he didn't have time to marvel at the gleaming car beside him. Eyes straight ahead, his station master always said. Grab the victim and get out.

"HEY! COME BACK!"

The fireman laid a hand on The Stranger's shoulder to get his attention as Situ struggled to keep up with his snow leopard-daemon.

Dimitri's POV

Dimitri will be speaking exclusively in Ukrainian.

Dimitri knew two things right now. The fire was coming from the nuclear power plant. And high school Science had taught him that fire + nuclear power plant = boom.

He wasn't going to stick around for the boom.

The man turned away from the crowd (some of them were tweeting about it. Tweeting! The idiots!) and hurried away.

The only problem to his plan was that a snow leopard was behind them. And a man in one of those bio-suit things you saw on the telly when shit was about to get real. But mostly a snow leopard.

"SNOW LEOPARD! THERE'S AN ESCAPED SNOW LEOPARD FROM THE ZOO!"

Archy was wired. This was a dangerous place. The KGB would be standing around every corner, the soviets would be watching for anything weird. This was an international hotbed, to say nothing of the radiation.

At the grab behind, Archy quickly spun, grabbed, and hauled Finta behind him and into an alley, out of view of the portal and anyone on the streets. He swung and held him up against a cement wall. "Listen, you do not want to be here" he said, "first, this place is a disaster zone, the air here will kill you. Second, the magisterium doesn't want anyone here. They'll make your life very unpleasant if you live." He was trying to be nice, the firefighter didn't deserve to die over something that wasn't his fight.

Eve kept ahead of the racoon and simply turned to face her once they were in the alleyway.

Finta's POV

Situ shrunk away from the snow leopard. Leave? Yes, let's leave at once. Finta, on the other hand...

"What about you? If it's so dangerous, we gotta go, now! We call the Magisterium, and they'll come in and figure out what to - "

A group of people appeared at the mouth of the alley, all chattering in a foreign language and pointing at The Stranger's snow leopard daemon. Some were pointing black rectangles at her, but the strangest, most outlandish thing of all...

"Where the fuck are their daemons?"

"This is beyond their scope" Archy said, "they would only cover this up and let the suffering go on. As for me, I'm fine, hence the gas mask and gloves. They will filter out and block most of the poison, I can treat myself to handle the rest."

As he finished, the group arrived and with what looked to be guns. Eve immediately retreated down the alley. Bullets were no good to either of them, forged in a nuclear hell or not. Archy followed, grabbing the man and shoving him down the way, "but we'll handle that later, for now, run or die." He pulled a smoke grenade from his pocket, ripped out the pin and hurled it at the ground before following Eve.. His Russian was rather... rusty, to say the least and their words always sounded angry, but given that their nuclear plant just blew itself straight to hell, he could imagine every word being very angry

OOC: From here.

A window! Finally! Richard looked around. A bit unfortunate for the window to open in a London suburb in front of the people. But he would deal with that later.

We need to get the people back! We don't know how dangerous this world is!

Fire in the distance and a bunch of people. How dangerous can that be?

No, what was important now was -

The man looked at Ryan sharply. Window? How the fuck did he know anything about windows?!

"What do you mean by window?"

Borys's POV

Borys will be speaking in Ukrainian.

Borys, the fireman, directed the last fire truck out of the station and snapped at his walkie talkie.

"Last truck is out. I repeat. Last truck is out. Over."

His head immediately replied.

"Stay at HQ and help coordinate from there. Over."

He was about to run back inside when something caught his attention. A man in a Hazmat suit from the nuclear plant! What was he doing here? The fireman immediately rushed over.

"How did you get here from the nuclear plant so quickly? What's the situation like over there?"

In his haste, he did not notice the snow leopard around them.

Crap.

Archy paused, he pulled out his phone, scrambling through it's programs, searching for the universal translator. He'd spent months with aliens, what did you expect to find on his phone? It would hear his words, translate them, and produce a tune soundwave to change his sounds to match that of the desired language.

"Say again, comrade," he said, turning to face the firefighter, "it is hard to hear from within this suit, these clothes."

Borys's POV

Borys will be speaking in Ukrainian.

Borys waved his hands anxiously. The suit, on closer examination, did not look like the ones issued over at Chornobyl. But what else would someone be doing dressed like that in this neighbourhood?

"How did you get here from the nuclear plant so quickly? What's the situation like over there?"

"I am a researcher from Moscow," Archy answered, "I was sent with my own equipment to study the reactor tomorrow." He gestured to the distant plume of smoke, "I woke to see this and decided I had better put my equipment on and try to help." He gestured down at his suit, "I was going to test this, it's supposed to be more resistant to radiation. It appears today, I'll have to give it a true field test."

He glanced around for the firefighter from the other world, he pointed at him, "I'll also have to tend to this man, he appears to have received a rare radiation burst focused on his head... he's forgotten to speak the mother tongue, he knows only English now."

Careful Ryan. Richard has picked up on something you said.

Ryan weaved his way around the chaos, his grey fox daemon keeping close by his feet. 'Windows. You know, gateway to another world,' he said in hushed tones to Richard. 'I would have thought you have heard of it, being so rich and important.' The scholar turned around to grin, only to be jostled heavily on the shoulder by a passing stranger.

'One of the scholars at Jordan mentioned it,' Ryan said, looking at the big plume of smoke in the distance. 'What the heck is that?'

Currently I am Dooting adults in Oxford, explaining MDD to a child, and picking up a woman at a bar.

Ryan: Loyalty. That is all I have for the Magisterium.
Nalan: You suck.

"Huh."

Which was about the only thing Richard would comment on the matter. Were windows so prevalent that it was common gossip among scholars in Jordan's?

Well what did you expect? The people there aren't stupid.

Actually, I thought most of them were.

Morpheusa squinted. There was a column of smoke in the distance all right. It looked like a fire. And further up ahead was another, smaller cloud of smoke. What the hell was going on?

"I've no idea what's that, Ryan. Want to go ahead and take a closer look?"
